Ginger; one of my best herbal friends! Here is a link for headache information and a lot more! With Excerpt~~~Good Day
Excerpt;
More than 45 million Americans have headaches severe enough to send them to a doctor, according to the National Headache Foundation in Chicago. If you suffer from recurring headaches, it is important that you see your doctor. Recurring headaches can be symptoms or indications of serious disorders such as tumors, meningitis, blood poisoning or infection in or near the brain.
The majority of headaches, however, are tension headaches, which tighten up muscles in your head. They are triggered by stress, illness, bright lights, food sensitivities or even changes in the weather. Next time you experience this type of headache, remember that it can be eased with relaxation techniques, gentle massage of the back of the neck and sedative herbs. In fact, a good way to deal with most headaches is to reduce the stress in your life.
Hangover, hunger, migraine, cluster and "ice cream" headaches (brought on by sudden cold, such as eating ice cream too quickly) are examples of circulation or vascular headaches. They are helped by taking herbs that promote relaxation, along with those that dilate blood vessels in the head.
In some cases, long-term use of typical commercial headache relievers—codeine, acetaminophen, meperidine (Demerol), ibuprofen and even aspirin—makes your headaches more frequent, more severe or both. When the New England Center for Headache in Greenwich, Connecticut, took people who experience chronic headaches off their daily dose of five or six painkillers, a surprising two-thirds of them were having fewer headaches by the end of the month. After two months, four-fifths of these people were experiencing even less pain than when they were taking the pills. And the immediate side effects of the drugs—digestive problems, drowsiness and dizziness—are nothing to shrug off.
If these statistics alone are not enough to persuade you to turn to herbs the next time a headache strikes, consider the long-term effects of the typical painkillers. The results of a 1994 scientific survey suggest that there might be a direct correlation between the habitual use of acetaminophen—at least one tablet a day for a year or more—and the development of kidney failure. The survey also indicated that people who take large quantities of other pain relievers, such as ibuprofen, naproxen and indomethacin, may increase their chance of kidney failure eightfold. The majority of painkillers also cause stress on the liver, especially in high or repeated doses. This is because they are detoxified in the liver.
Want some natural alternatives to ease your aching head? Try drinking a ginger tea. Numerous clinical studies have shown that this herb can be used to relieve headaches. Researchers believe it does so by relaxing the blood vessels in the head and diminishing swelling in the brain. It also activates natural opiates in the brain that relieve pain, and it reduces prostaglandins, which are responsible for causing inflammation.
Other traditional headache teas are made with chamomile, lemon balm and linden (the flowers of the lime tree), which is is far more popular in Europe than in North America. In The British Herb Pharmacopoeia, linden is listed as a sedative for treating nervous tension and headaches. Researchers suspect that this herb heals migraines (and other vascular headaches) by improving blood circulation.
For other ways to ease tension headaches, see the information on natural aspirins and muscle relaxants in "Pain: Inflammation" in chapters 125 through 135. You should also consider using herbs known to reduce stress (see "Stress" in chapter 20)—these may take care of your stress headaches.

For the Love of Tea; What is your preference? Black, Green, White or Oolong?
I like White 1st, then green. I got burned out on black teas in my teens. I drank quite alot and haven't had much since. I do like it in combination with other teas and such.

Evergreen shrub to tree whose leaves are used to make tea.
FEATURES: Small 2.5cm across white, occasionally pink, cupped flowers with a mass of yellow stamens. Leaves variable in size from around 1 Q-22cm long. The small growing tip leaves are used to make tea. ShruB to tall tree in sub/tropical climate but often grown as a low hedge of restricted in size by freqlient tip pruning.
FOR BEST RESULTS: Enrich soil with well rotted compost and retain moisture with a good thick mulch. When being harvested for tea the shoots and 2-3 top leaves are narvested every 8-1 Q days.

Food, FDA, regulation and the heart of healthy foods
Here's what Yahoo has to say
http://health.yahoo.net/news/s/ap/us_congress_food_safety
I'd take this with a gain of salt. Our food safety is ultimately in our own hands. Education on many aspects is probably the most important thing to consider. There are so many sides to consider. Once food is out of the producers hands many things happen to it that is out of control of the maker/manufacturer.
Many consumers eat in such a way that is not conducive to genuine health to start. Education on healthy practices is great, if it is actual education. I.e. exposer the ideas outside of reading about it and having the whole of the students life involved. The secular education/family connections are weak at best save for the very few who can bridge that ever growing gap. I have also learned lately that what is 'said' is very important. So I hesitate to say much in a negative way.
I would just like to see a community that can bring food and the education of it broadened. Many kids haven't had a garden or forest experience that would show them any different. And many have more of the grocery/restaurant experience to contend with.
Just thinking.

Plant of the Day; Linseed

http://parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/EwerbyandEvedon/imageDetail.asp?id=57973
below from wiki;
Linseed oil, also known as flax seed oil, is a clear to yellowish oil obtained from the dried ripe seeds of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum, Linaceae). The oil is obtained by cold pressing, sometimes followed by solvent extraction.
Linseed oil can polymerize and the reaction is exothermic, and rags soaked in it can ignite spontaneously. Due to its polymer-like properties linseed oil is used on its own or blended with other oils, resins and solvents as an impregnator and varnish in wood finishing, as a pigment binder in oil paints, as a plasticizer and hardener in putty and in the manufacture of linoleum. The use of linseed oil has declined over the past several decades with the increased use of alkyd resins, which are similar but partially synthetic materials that resist yellowing.[1]
It is an edible oil, but because of its strong flavor and odor is only a minor constituent of human nutrition, although it is marketed as a nutritional supplement

John Hopkins Update - Good article
Highly recommended to read!!!!!
For those of you who may not know, Johns Hopkins is a highly respected health institution and does incredible research. Because I care about YOU, I would like you to take the time to read this and PLEASE, PLEASE.. Heed the advise.
John Hopkins Update - Good article
AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY ('TRY', BEING THE KEY WORD) TO ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHNS HOPKINS IS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY.
Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins :
1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.
2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime.
3 When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.
4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.
5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.
6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.
7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.
8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.
9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.
10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.
11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply..
*CANCER CELLS FEED ON:
A. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses, but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in color. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.
B. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer cells are being starved.
C. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.
D. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).
E. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.
12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines becomes putrefied and leads to more toxic buildup.
13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.
14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the bodies own killer cells to destroy cancer cells.. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.
15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, un-forgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.
16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.
1. No plastic containers in micro.
2. No water bottles in freezer.
3.. No plastic wrap in microwave.
Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals cause cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Cast le Hospital, was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Pa per isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.
Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.
This is an article that should be sent to anyone important in your life.

Maniac Warning! Here I go again! Sorry Folks, but I get these little prompts from the powers that be from earth.care2.com. I don't always get to them,

I don't always care. I do always want to help where I can, and be as informed as I can, but I have a theory about that too. Should I go on? No? Well then, I'll just say that it is EASY to say what you stand for. It is not easy to keep up with the rig-a-ma-row though. For one thing, I am not privy to a bunch of the big industry issues, simply because I am not a Big industry, nor do I pretend to be close to it. I, personally don't want to be close to it. I live in a really industrialized area and it is a huge mess! They don't even try to 'fluph' anymore, which is okay by me. Kind of 'third world' lookin' in some spots, but call it how you see it? ya know?
So, my little letter is posted here. I probably sound looney, or immature, or ignorant, but that's how it is. My daughter said that it's better that way, and now-a-days I feel a bit concerned about their generations plights, but try to be that 'live for today' to the best we can kinda momma. anywho!!!
# 36,525:
I know we all drive cars to work and for the family, but how can we curb our own driving habits and keep our bills paid? I don't know exactly how to change these problems, but I do know that we need careful consideration where oil drilling is concerned. If we can get to a TRUE safer energy supply, that would be the best a company, government, and society could do! If we are going to keep with the oil, then we need a lot more security for our planet and all of its inhabitants! Agreed?
Some careful considerations for the people and wildlife around these drilling sights, and a whole lot of research and discloser are just the tip of the iceberg I'd like to see.
Thank you for your time sir!
Namesta,
Allisonian
So this gets mailed to our President Barack Obama along with some of what earth care wants to have said, K (?) I want to edit them sometimes and that is why I 'sometimes' don't want to write, Or I am simply not on the same page as them, but I like people who are still working on making things better, and maybe even someday, sustainable. GO TEAM Earth Care! Who among you will be number 36,526? Or let me know how you really feel, as one of my esteemed colleagues would say.
Here is the link and you can tick the title to be redirected there as well.

I really just want to raise oats and barley and call it a day, but I don't have much resource for that, so I dream...

Food Combining/Digestion Chart

Ticking the title redirects to a printable food combining chart. Here is the link to the below article from the Internal Health Library;
http://www.internethealthlibrary.com/DietandLifestyle/Food_combining.htm
It is commonly believed that the human stomach should be able to digest any number of different foods at the same time. However, digestion is governed by physiological chemistry. It is not what we eat that is crucial to our health, but what we digest and assimilate.
Digestive enzymes
Digestive enzymes are secreted in very specific amounts and at very specific times. Different food types require different digestive secretions. Carbohydrate foods require carbohydrate-splitting enzymes, whereas protein foods require protein splitting enzymes, etc. It is the knowledge of the digestive process that has led many health practitioners to promote efficient food combining, the rules of which are briefly explained below:
1. Carbohydrate foods and acid foods should not be eaten at the same meal. Do not eat bread, rice or potatoes with lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruits, pineapples, tomatoes or other sour fruits. This is because the enzyme, ptyalin, acts only in an alkaline medium; it is destroyed even by a mild acid! Fruit acids not only prevent carbohydrate digestion, but they also produce a fermentation. Oxalic acid, for example, diluted to one part in 10,000 completely arrests the action of ptyalin. And, there is enough acetic acid in one teaspoon of wine vinegar to completely halt salivary digestion. Dr Percy Howe of Harvard Medical School states:
"Many people who cannot eat oranges at a meal derive great benefit from eating them fifteen to thirty minutes before the meal". Herbert Sheldon, author of 'The science and fine art of food and nutrition' reports: " I have put hundreds of patients , who have told me that they could not eat oranges or grapefruit, upon a diet of these fruits and they found that they could take them. Such people are in the habit of taking these foods with a breakfast of cereal, with cream and sugar, egg on toast, stewed prunes and coffee, or some similar meal."
Tomatoes should also never be combined with starchy food as the combination of the various acids in the tomato, which are intensified on cooking, are very much opposed to the alkaline digestion of starches. They may be eaten with leafy vegetables and fat foods.
What all this tends to mean is that people who say they cannot eat oranges or grapefruit as it gives them gas, could be blaming the fruit, when the problem may lie with the escape of starches and the bodies release of pancreatic juice and intestinal enzymes to break them down.
In cases where there is hyperacidity of the stomach there is great difficulty digesting starches. Fermentation and poisoning of the body occurs along with much discomfort. This is because the digestion of carbohydrates (starches and sugars) and of protein is so different, that when they are mixed in the stomach they interfere with the digestion of each other. An acid process (gastric digestion) and an alkaline process (salivary digestion) can not be carried on at the same time in an ideal way in the stomach. Before long, they cannot proceed at all , as the rising acidity of the stomach soon completely stops carbohydrate digestion. The highest efficiency in digestion demands that we eat in such a way as to offer the least hindrance to the work of digestion.
2. Do not eat a concentrated protein and a concentrated carbohydrate at the same meal. This means do not eat nuts, meat, eggs, cheese, or other protein foods at the same meal with bread, cereals, potatoes, sweet fruits. Cakes, etc. Candy and sugar greatly inhibit the secretion of gastric juice and markedly delay digestion and if consumed in large quantities can depress the stomach activity.
3. Do not eat two concentrated proteins at the same meal. Avoid nuts and meat, or eggs and meat, cheese and nuts, cheese and eggs, meat and milk, or eggs and milk or nuts at milk at the same meal. Milk, if taken at all, is best taken alone. The reason for avoiding eating these combinations is because each protein requires a specific character and strength of digestive juice to be secreted. Eggs require different timing in stomach secretions than do either meat or milk.
4. Do not eat fats with proteins. This means do not use cream, butter, oil, etc with meat, eggs, cheese, nuts, etc. Fat depresses the action of the gastric glands by delaying the development of appetite juices and inhibiting the pouring out of the proper gastric juices for meats, nuts, eggs or other protein. Fats may lower the entire gastric tone more than fifty per cent.
5. Do not eat acid fruits with proteins. This is to say, oranges, tomatoes, lemons, pineapples, etc., should not be eaten with meat, eggs, cheese or nuts. Acid fruits seriously hamper protein digestion and results in putrefaction. Milk and orange juice, while by no means an indigestible combination, is far from a good combination. Orange juice and eggs form an even worse combination.
6. Do not consume starch and sugars together. Jellies, jams, fruit, butter, sugar, honey, syrups, molasses, etc., on bread, cake, or at the same meal with cereals, potatoes, etc., or sugar with cereal, will produce fermentation. The practice of eating starches that have been disguised by sweets is also a bad way to eat carbohydrates. If sugar is taken into the mouth it quickly fills with saliva but no ptyalin is present which we know is essential for starch digestion.
7. Eat but one concentrated starch food at a meal. This rule is more important as a means of overeating than as a means of avoiding a bad combination. While overeating of starches may lead to fermentation, there is no certainty that the combination of two starches will do so.
8. Do not consume melons with any other foods. Watermelon, muskmelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe and other melons should always be eaten alone. This is possibly due to the ease and speed in which melons decompose.
9. Milk is best taken alone or let alone. Milk is the natural food of the mammalian young, each species producing milk peculiarly and precisely adapted to the needs of its young. It is the rule that the young take the milk alone, not in combination with other foods. Milk does not digest in the stomach, but in the duodenum, hence in the presence of milk the stomach does not respond with its secretion. The use of acid fruits with milk does not cause any trouble and apparently does not conflict with its digestion.
A suggested combination of meals is included in the following plan of eating three meals a day :
Breakfast
Fruit. Any fruit in season may be used. It is suggested that not more than three fruits be used at a meal, as, for example, grapes, well ripened bananas and an apple. It is well to have an acid fruit breakfast one morning and a sweet breakfast the next. In season breakfast may be made of melons. In the winter months, one or two dried fruits such as figs, dates, raisins, prunes, etc., may be substituted for the fresh fruit.
Lunch
A large raw vegetable salad of lettuce, celery, and one or two other raw vegetables plus avocado and alfalfa sprouts or nut and seeds. As an alternative, a vegetable salad (omitting tomatoes), one cooked green vegetable and a starch.
Dinner
A large raw vegetable salad (if nuts or cottage cheese are to be used as the protein, tomatoes may be used in this salad), two cooked non-starchy vegetables and a protein.
Fat meats, sour apples, beans, peanuts, peas, cereals, bread and jam, or hot cakes and honey or syrup, are notoriously slow in digestion and are frequent sources of discomfort and putrescent poisoning.
If the body’s reserves are carefully hoarded they will carry us well beyond the hundred year mark with youthful enthusiasm and zest. Their depletion is one of the most common calamities of modern life. The alkaloids and alcohols, with which gastro-intestinal decomposition charges our bodies, rob us of our reserves, greatly weaken our vital resistance and sooner or later produce a state of physiological collapse.

I believe, I believe
I have studied proper food combining for years. In study, I mean, I am the case. I have done what Mike says in the previous article here. But when it comes to eating fruit before a meal, I would take care to see how you feel after. I may be able, in the immediate future, find the article on the food digestion table.
One thing to consider when eating a whole fruit before each meal is that you may want to then wait about 30 minutes, or not consume a vegetable right after.
I have also heard, though, that fruit is any plant (fruit, vegie) that contains seeds. I'll have to look that up too, to confirm.
It is good to consider then research as I know many of you do.
Just sayin'~~~

On[un] ~ Syrup and other Wild Concoctions

I woke up this morning with that feeling in my throat that I had recently heard (throat clearingly) in others nearby and thought, My un~syrup, I went to the fridge and poured out the last of it, then made some fresh.
On Syrup
I use 1/3 roughly cubed onion (I use what I need, or what I have and adjust accordingly) and enough sugar to cover it, prepare it in the ½ pint to pint jar I store it in. I leave it out for a half an hour then put it in the fridge. In a hurry, I warm it slightly so the sugar dissolves quickly, but I think the quality is slightly effected as well. You can strain the liquid and store in a dropper bottle, or just store with the onion. I do both depending on time and such
(it's the same idea as when you prepare strawberries for strawberry shortcake if you use sugar.) If you do not use sugar, it can be prepared by cubing the onion and boiling it.
~~~
I have heard of using honey, but have not done that myself. I have soaked garlic cloves in honey as Susun Weed explained in one of her videos on You Tube. I didn't like taking by spoonful(but this could be the quality of honey I had). She recommended it for preventative and oncoming ills. I used it as a facial when I started getting a break out and it worked exceptionally well! I also used it on the souls of my feet and it softened them very nicely.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are also some great teas. Breath Easy by Traditional Medicinal [caution, it's strong], but the ingredients can be found easily. I also found an interesting homemade throat lozenge on You Tube by Herb Mentor or Mountain Rose Herbs. It had the same kind of ingredients.
The following are ingredient in the Breathe Easy Tea;
Licorice root
eucalyptus
bitter fennel fruit
Bi Yan Pian dry Aqueous extract(I don't use when I make my own)
peppermint leaf
Calendula flower
Pleurisy root {Asclepias tuberosa, common from Canada southwards, growing from Ontario to Minnesota, most abundantly southward and southwestward, is known popularly as Pleurisy Root, from its medicinal use. Its stem forms an exception to Asclepias in general, by being almost or entirely devoid of the acrid milky juice containing caoutchouc, that distinguishes the rest of the genus and has gained them the name of Milkweeds.
---Description---It is a handsome, fleshy rooted, perennial plant, growing 1 to 1 1/2foot high and bearing corymbs of deep yellow and orange flowers in September. When cultivated, it does not like being disturbed, and prefers good peat soil.
The rootstock, the part used medicinally, is spindle-shaped and has a knotty crown, slightly but distinctly annulate, the remainder longitudinally wrinkled.
The dried root as found in commerce is usually in cut or broken pieces of variable size, 1 to 6 inches long and about 3/4 inch in thickness, externally pale orange-brown, becoming greyish-brown when kept long, internally whitish. It is tough and has an uneven fracture; the broken surface is granular; that of the bark is short and brittle. The wood is yellowish, with large white medullary rays. The drug is almost inodorous, but has a bitterish and disagreeable, somewhat acrid taste.}

I also love French Onion Soup. I cut the onion longwise in rings, fry them in a splash of olive oil until soft, pour just enough brags liquid aminios (about a liberal tablespoon) add a clove of garlic, let cook just a few moments, add enough water to cover, (as you do for potatoes for mashing), and let cook 20 minutes. I make crutons as I am waiting, toast with parmesan for dipping. YUM~~~

My other task this morning was infusing my dandelion leaves. I can't wait for the end of the day to have some. I am a lover of the little lions since I was a small child. There was a fable about the lion of the dandelion that I don't remember lucidly, but tacitly. I want to research it, but I kind of like the childhood fables from my life that are remembered like a dream. It makes it fantastic!
Happy things and what a glorious day!
Disclaimer; this is my blog for referencing. I am not a professional obviously and am only referencing and sharing some of the wonders I have found in the garden. They help me, but I still see my doctor when I feel ill. She gets a giggle and a gaggle when she listens to my medicine cupboard inventory.
I also like cherry bark syrup when I need it.
Namesta!

Banana This; Recycle Old Peels~ fertilizer or silver polish
There are things you can do with that old peel.
1. Do you have a green thumb? House hold plants and outside gardens require fertilization. A great way to give your plants nutrients is with a banana peel. The banana peel is very rich in potassium and phosphorus, which give that added boost to your plants soil, especially so with roses. Here is how to use a banana peel to fertilizer your soil for your plants. Remove the peel from the banana. Place the banana peel on a cookie sheet to let it air dry. Grab a paper bag or envelope. Crumble the dried banana peel and place it in the bag. Let the banana sit at room temperature for about two days. When your caring for your plant, give it a potassium treat of crumbled banana peel. Mix well in the soil to ensure the roots are fed evenly.
2. Have you been thinking about pulling out that old silver? Well there is no time like the present. Bananas peel can also be used to polish silver. Yes, polish silver. Take the old peels and place them in a blender. You want the peels to become smooth and creamy. Once they have, grab a cloth and small amounts of the creamed banana peel and begin polishing your silver. The shine will be breath taking.

SOURDOUGH STARTER with WILD YEAST
Wild yeasts exist in the air around you and to some extent on the wheat berries. There are wild yeasts on grapes (unsulphured) and apples and other fruits. It is those wild yeasts which are 'captured' to make a sourdough starter. The process takes from 3 to 5 days. I wish I had specific amounts for you, but you could start with 1/4 to 1/2 cup of flour and mix in enough warm (not hot) water to make a thin paste. DO NOT make it too soupy. That, in fact, is the trick to a good starter, according to the French bread makers, and I think they should know. And after you've fooled around with the flour and water thing, you might wish to branch out into adding those unsulphured grapes, apples, sour milk, etc as a catalyst in order to capture other strains of yeast. Each of these strains has a slightly different taste. In fact if you move to another area, you might end up with a starter that produces an entirely different flavor. For instance, San Francisco sourdough bread is well known and has a distinct taste due to the wild strains in the air there. On day one you mix the flour and water (and add any catalysts to encourage fermentation) and place in a warm spot. After 3 days, the dough should be moist, inflated, and slightly sour. More flour and water is added (mixed in) and left to sit in a warm spot. After 2 days the process is repeated. Then the next day it is done again. Note the order: 3 days, 2 days, 1 day. At this point you should be able to make a loaf of bread using part of the starter and adding back what you took out in the form of more flour and water. Rule of thumb: Use about 10% starter to size of loaf. In the case of a 2 lb loaf this is a bit over 3 oz of starter (3.2 to be exact). For a 1 lb loaf 1.5 oz would be used. A book that describes this process in great detail is The Village Baker by Joe Ortiz, copyright 1993, published by Ten Speed Press, Berkley CA. If it's not still in print, try the used books stores, that's where I got mine. Or try your local library. If they don't have it, they might be able to get it for you. ©2008 by Ernestina Parziale
